Outer Banks Running
Club - 2007 Minutes
Outer Banks Running Club
Minutes of June 13, 2007 Meeting
Held at Outer Banks Running Company Store in Duck
6:15 p.m.
Meeting called to order 6:25 p.m.
President Ed Beckley introduced members to
Outer Banks Running Company store hosts Judy and George Bugyi, and
welcomed home from Iraq our second-ever president Frank Ausband. Ed
thanked Frank for his service to us all overseas.
Approved March 14 minutes, which have been on
the web site for the past three months.
Treasurer's report: $1,897.94 in the
club checking account. Ed reported due to the absence of Jim Snyder,
who asked to be excused due to a children's event conflict.
Vice President's report: Position is
vacant. Ed reported that the web site has been updated and is
looking good. He asked officers to consider moving up in slots, and
members consider filling officer positions. He said it would be good
if someone would step up and look into getting club technical shirts
with logos. Nobody at the meeting came forward.
Coach's report: Ari had just come from
the Wednesday evening track workout. She encouraged members to come
out for the training sessions over the summer, to start getting
ready for the fall races. A small number of members have been coming
out on recent Saturdays for the long runs.
Old Business: Ed reminded everyone of
the June 16 and July 4 club races, and asked for support in terms of
signing up to run or volunteer. The July 4 Killer Dunes 2-Miler over
Jockey's Ridge is being sponsored by Outer Banks Running Company.
Judy Bugyi presented a check to the club for $500 for T-shirts and
expenses for the race. The Outer Banks Kiwanis Club has also given a
check for $100 and around $40 in in-kind gifts (trophies left over
from the Nags Head Woods run). Charter Cable has provided small
flags to mark the 2-mile course this year. Gallop Funeral Services
is providing water. It's hoped that WalMart will come through with
some aide drink and other items. Ed expressed thanks and gratitude
to the running store owners for their tremendous ongoing support of
running in the community, and for the club. Ed said the T-shirts for
the July 4 race are on order, and proceeds from the race would
support the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group, the local Chapter of
the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the club. We have five people
signed up already, including three from Pennsylvania, one from
Virginia, and one local non-member. Members can get entry forms at
www.outerbanksrunningclub.org, at the store, and at the YMCA. Please
talk up this race with your running and walking friends.
Ed mentioned that the RRCA newsletter “Inside
Track” was available in print form, and left a copy for members'
review. Members can go to www.rrca.org for the online version.
We still need members to serve on all
committees. Contact Ed if you are interested in giving just a couple
hours per month to help. Only a very few people are making the club
run, and it is very important to spread the work so nobody becomes
overburdened. When we all do just a little, the work gets done
economically.
New Business: Bobbie Beckley told
members that the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Marathon and
Half-Marathon Team in Training would be starting up again this
summer, with a kick-off meeting at 10 a.m., Saturday, July 14, at
the Kill Devil Hills Library, behind the post office on Mustian St.
She said it is the biggest annual fund raiser for the Society, and
the largest endurance training program in the world. In return for
raising money for cancer research and patient aid, including
financial aid to everyone locally who has a blood disease, anyone
interested in learning how to safely train for a marathon or half
marathon would be teamed up with an experienced coach, and be given
a tailored training program, team workouts, uniform and a trip to
the prestigious 30th annual Kiawah Island, SC, Marathon and Half in
December. 39-time marathoner Ed Beckley is the coach, and she is the
fund raising mentor of the team. The team will be staying at the
acclaimed beachfront Sanctuary Hotel at Kiawah, only steps to the
start and finish lines. For more details call Bobbie on 441-2431.
P.S. The team will be using the OBX half marathon as a training run
on the way to Kiawah.
The club's summer family picnic will be in
conjunction with the annual Sanbar 5K race in Kitty Hawk on Aug. 11.
Check out our web site events page for the contact information. This
is a very informal affair. The idea is that you can sign up for the
5K, and then plan on bringing your own family picnic dinner and
drinks, and stay after the race for some camaraderie, swimming,
eating and fun. Bring your own everything, and just plan to have a
few hours at the beach with your running buddies after the race.
In other business, Ed handed out RRCA-backed
Merastar auto and home insurance discount brochures. He also stated
a need for club equipment, including more race ribbons, a
printer-stopwatch, cork boards, cones, directional signs and mile
markers. Ed said that once we generate more funding from the July 4
race, we should purchase at least the ribbons and the stopwatch, so
we have a more professional way to time our races.
He also said that First Flight High School
Cross Country Coach Ronnie Hudgins has asked us to consider helping
him stage a cross country event this fall. He will need timers,
sentries and other volunteers.
The Perquimans County Trailblazers asked that
we inform members of their fall 5K Run/Walk, which will take place
on Oct. 27 at 8 a.m., at Missing Mill Park in Hertford. Contact

The club then adjourned its meeting and began a
fantastic shoe clinic put on by Judy and George Bugyi. Judy is an
experienced marathoner who runs 60 miles per week, and George is a
former Penn State University coach and exercise physiologist. They
went over arch types, pronation and supination, and how they related
to the need for motion control, stability and cushioning shoes. They
went over the physiology of foot strike to the ground and Judy
provided several members with personal foot evaluations to insure
they were riding in the correct type of shoe for them. Judy provided
a comprehensive set of handouts on the clinic for those in
attendance. Ed and Ari will bring extra copies of the handouts to
future training sessions.
Judy also provided wonderful treats for us at
the meeting, including home-made fudge. |
