Kitty Hawk Heritage Day 5K
Attracts a hundred hearty athletes
One hundred runners and walkers dodged the rain bullet again this
year, completing the ninth annual Kitty Hawk Heritage Day 5K
footrace at the Barrier Island Fitness Center last Saturday. Tommy
Thomas of Manns Harbor scampered over the hilly Kitty Hawk
neighborhoods to claim victory in a spritely 17:34. He was followed
by Kitty Hawk's Scott Ngeonjuklin in 18:10 and Kelly O'Donnell of
San Diego, CA, in 18:20.
Leading the women were Jessica Witter of Kill Devil Hills in 20:26,
Paige Sillies of Kitty Hawk in 21:15 and Sarah James of Richmond,
VA, in 21:22.
It was the largest heritage day race ever, and around 20 children
participated in the associated 1-Mile Fun Run. The race was the
preamble to the day-long festivities, just down the road at the
Promenade.
Race
Director Ed Beckley thanked the top sponsors:
Flying Fish Screenprinting, The Hilton Garden Inn, The Ramada Plaza
Nags Head Beach, Victory Chevrolet and Sysco Foods, and Barrier
Island Fitness Center, for the time, talent, dollars and
hospitality. He applauded the Outer Banks Team in Training for
staging and implementing a very smooth event, and the Outer Banks
Running Club for sanctioning it.
Beckley said the race raised a couple thousand dollars for the ENC
Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A quarter of the net
proceeds will go to the Taylor family of Kill Devil Hills who lost
their mother, Sandy, Sept. 9, to complications after her remission
from Acute Myelogenous Leukemia.

winner with a time of 20:26. (Misty Garza Photo)
